to be talking about iphone versus
android hopefully with a freshperspective usually here on youtube whenyouhear somebody talking about thissubject you hear statements like androidis more customizable than ios apple ismore privacy focused android splitscreen support is really useful iphone's continuity features are super useful android phones have usb-c a variety ofdevices always-on displays more customizable looks cameras with moremegapixels and the ability to side loadapps iphones get updates for half adecade have better more premium supportgenerally just work have better resalevalue have more accessories to choosefrom and generally just benefit fromtighter integration of hardware andsoftware and the list goes on but inthis video i actually want to either diga little deeper or maybe just zoom out alittle further and cover some groundthat's maybe more interesting or in someways maybe even more important nowwhether you're considering an androiddevice or an ios device for your nextphone there's always more than onereason to prefer one over the other soone thing's for sure there's no reasonto trash somebody else's treasure usewhat makes you happy and let otherpeople do the same so let me start thenby mapping out some of the top levelstrengths and weaknesses for each side atop level strength and weakness on theiphone side of things is that the iphoneisn't a solitary product it's deeplyinterconnected with other complementaryapple products and services in fact iwould go so far as to argue that theiphone itself isn't the real productthat apple's trying to sell here insteadit's almost like it's more of a featureof apple's actual product the famedapple ecosystem a deep ecosystem canfeel like a really great feature tosomebody because the more apple devicesa person buys the more powerful anduseful that ecosystem actually becomesthe flip side though is that the costassociated with building out the appleecosystem makes switching away expensivemaybe for some people prohibitively sonow a top level strength and weakness onthe android side of things is itsreliance on google's surveillancecapitalism machine because at its heartgoogle is not in fact in the business ofselling phones as much as it's in thebusiness of selling ads so the moreprivate information and experiencesgoogle has access to the morepersonalized targeted and effectivetheir operating system apps services andyes ads can be now a more personal izedexperience can feel like a really greatfeature to people because the morecompany knows about you the more
efficiently they can serve you the flipside though is that that efficiencymight come at the expense of trueautonomy if your information isproductized and potentially exploited onthis platform can you ever truly becertain that the products you're buyingand the information you're consuming isof your own free will so pick yourpoison because there really is no suchthing as the perfect phone or theperfect company so i guess at the end ofthe day a lot of your decision is gonnacome down to which company you trustmore real quick let me just say ifyou're liking the vibe of this video whynot take a minute and hit subscribe formore also i'm giving away a brand nehomepod to one lucky winner that followsme on instagram and twitter you couldalready be following me but if you'renew around here i'll link those up foryou so you can start following me andi'll announce the winners at the end ofthe month on those two platforms nowwith all the camera comparison videosthe battery comparison test the sideside-by-side benchmarking here onyoutube i actually have to say that ifeel like comparing model versus modeland feature versus feature year afteryear is actually not quite as importantas people maybe assume obviously whenwe're talking about phones features domatter but the really good features theones that aren't just gimmicks arefairly likely to eventually get copiedby the other side we saw this whenwidgets arrived on the iphone's homescreen and we saw this when swipecontrols came to android devices andhonestly there are countless otherexamples with new iphones i think yougenerally know what to expect year toyear probably a more iterative approachto improving what's already a highlypolished phone that basically just workseach year i think it's pretty clear thatapple's mostly concerned with competingagainst itself and only itself insteadof trying to outdo the latest andgreatest android devices out there eventhough oftentimes that is exactly whanends up happening similarly i think themajority of android devices arebasically fighting it out amongstthemselves every year mostly just tryingto get a bigger slice of the overallandroid pie as a result of that androidmanufacturers are incentivized to try tograb headlines by being not justiteratively different but radicallydifferent if they can and sometimes thisdoes lead to breakthroughs likeperiscopic zooms but other times it alsoleads to gimmicks like glasses-free 3dscreens in either case what you wouldconsider the core smartphoneexperiencerarely if ever changes year to yearsmartphones text they game they browsethey email they call they take photosthey control smart homes and a new formfactor like a foldable or a more privatebrowsing experience like apple's privaterelay don't really do all that much tochange the fundamental smartphoneexperience and like i said the trulystandout features are likely to getcopied by either side within a fewgenerations now over the next decade so a new platform is probably going toemerge that will eventually replacesmartphones probably some kind of ar orvr platform in either case instead ofjust having tunnel vision and laserfocusing on which new phone has thecoolest new feature every year it mightbe good to take things on balance andalso consider what the future looks likeand how happy you're likely to be inthree to five years because when you buya new phone you're not just buying aphone you're actually heading in adirection so if you buy an iphone thedirection that you're taking is headingstraight into apple's ecosystem and overthe next three to five years you couldreally spend a decent amount of moneyinvesting there but yeah you can get anapple watch and a mac and unlock yourmac with your apple watch and you canstart an email on your ipad and finishon your iphone you can send anintercom voice message using your airpods that broadcast to the homepod minisaround your house and you can scan itemsfrom your iphone directly to apple noteson your mac you can get applecare forpremium support you can use imessage youcan set reminders on siri on your applewatch that go off when you get out ofyour carplay-enabled car your iphone isgoing to last you for more years if youwanted to because you'll get updates forlonger and then you'll be able to sellit for a decent amount because appleproducts retain their value longer andyou can do it all while feeling moresecure and private mostly maybe yes theapple ecosystem is great unless or untilapple does something that you don't likelike what if someday apple decided tonot scan for illegal images but to scanfor people who might belong to a certainreligious group or any other groupbecause i would hate to see tools thatwere developed with a good purpose atheart turned into weapons of intolerancenow if you choose to buy an androiddevice you're buying into a future withmore device options and with moreopportunities for customization that'sright you're going to be able to changeyour launcher to put app icons whereveryou want you can root your phone andinstall custom firmware you can bypassgoogle's app store and side load appsyou can use a phone without a notch thathas expandable storage and includes aheadphone jack or you can buy a phonefor even less than 400you can split your screen to read anarticle and watch a twitch stream at thesame time you can use one usbc chargerto charge your laptop your switch andyour android phone you can get thatalways on lock screen of your dreams youcan ask more complicated questions ofgoogle assistant and expect smarteranswers you can get a phone with astylus and yes you can easily theme yourdevices yep all the options andcustomizations are great until or unlesswell let's just say i shudder to thinkabout everything that google not tomention facebook while we're at it knowsnot just about android users buthonestly about the entire populationdoes google know you better than youknow yourself do advertisers in thewords of a retired harvard businessschool professor surveillance capitalismis the unilateral claiming of privatehuman experience as free raw materialfor translation into behavioral datathese data are then computed andpackaged as prediction products and soldinto behavioral futures markets shewrote a book a while back and it causeda big stir because she goes on to sathat these smart and personalizeddevices and experiences that so manypeople enjoymight actually in some way even beputting democracy at risk wow it's likeyou might think you're really informedbut maybe you're only as informed as x yor z has allowed you to be and youwouldn't know the difference here's theway i see it when you buy an iphoneyou're buying a puzzle piece and it's areal nice puzzle piece all on its ownbut you're not gonna realize the fullpicture until you assemble the rest ofthe puzzle i.e until you buy other appleproducts which all become so much bettertogether likewise when you buy anandroid phone you're still buying apuzzle piece but it's just the overallpuzzle that these pieces fit into isjust much much smaller google's puzzleecosystem is growing samsung's puzzleslash ecosystem is growing but neitherone comes anywhere close to matching theactual grandeur the gravity of apple'smassive puzzle slash ecosystem andsmaller android manufacturers for thepart really are just sellingindividual puzzle pieces mostly sodecisions decisions for me personally ican just say i have chosen to go downthe iphone and apple route at least forthe time being it served me really wellin the past and i do feel like iproduced high quality work using apple'sproducts some people like one linussebastian might think of iphones asincremental expensive and boring but tome iphones are reliable premium andready to go right out of the box i findthat for me personally i wouldn't bespending a whole lot of time customizingthe grid layout of my home screen ortrying to overclock or under clock myphone for gaming or battery performanceif you're looking to get into the appleecosystem you can do so for as little as399 with the iphone se and you couldeven install all your favorite googleapps if you really wanted to and evencreate a shortcut to use googleassistant in place of siri you canessentially turn your iphone into a kindof an android in a way while still beingable to take advantage of all thebenefits of being in the apple ecosystemnow if you're looking to switch over toandroid you really can't pull all yourapple apps over with you the only appleapp that's really available over on theandroid side is apple music but thereare all kinds of phones at all kinds ofprice points with all sorts of formfactors with all sorts of manufacturertakes on what the best version ofandroid might look like and you get tochoose from all of those now you do havepeople out there saying things likeandroid phones are categorically cheapor complicated but honestly those arejust stereotypes there are plenty ofexpensive android devices out there madeout of really nice and premium materialsand i found that the android experiencecan be as complicated or asstraightforward as you make it alrightwell that's it for this video i hopethat you found this video to be than you expected anddifferent from other videos on thesubject that you've seen both in contentand tone i really tried hard to makethis useful so hopefully you feel moreempowered as you go to pick out yourphone now that was actually theparagraph i was going to say that's whati typed out but i asked jarvis my aiwriting assistant to rephrase that andinstead jarvis spit out i video took a slightly different approachthan most others you've seen about thissubject and maybe made it even easierfor you to make
